The Tide Turners Young Leaders Plastic Challenge is designed to educate youth across the world to understand the impact of plastic pollution and motivate them to reduce their plastic consumption, along with encouraging others.
The youth of today, which is going to form the society of tomorrow, is aware of the environmental impacts of our modern lifestyles and wants to make a difference. Such challenges provide them the impetus they need and the support to start a movement. Only if we empower the young generation through knowledge and skills, can we aspire to create a vibrant and sustainable future for our planet and humanity.
The challenge comprises three levels – Entry, Leader and Champion – with a scoring system. Scoring enough points at each level entitles the participant to move to the next level of the challenge.
Entry level: Activities are designed to get you thinking about your own consumption and how to reduce single-use plastic. It also encourages you to reach out to close friends and family, and start talking about plastic waste.
Leader level: You will get a chance to become true leaders. You will have to team up with other participants, and in small groups of 3 or 4, reach out to their schools, colleges, offices or communities to reduce single-use plastic. Activities will include undertaking an audit of plastic consumption and waste generated at the school, college or community level, as well as using innovative ways of raising awareness.
Champion level: Leaders will be ready to scale-up efforts to make a greater impact. Activities would include creating a waste management system at the school, college or community level; reaching out to shops or offices near homes or colleges and offer solutions for plastic waste; raise key issues on plastic waste in your society with the local politician; think through a media outreach plan to bring focus to the plastic waste issue.
